How do you find out if your young adult insurance policy is eligible for the Medicare program?
If you are a 21- to 24-year-old who has a policy that covers a job or household and has not received a claim for at least six months, your policy is considered eligible for Medicare.
To be eligible, a policy must be offered by an insurance company that is not subject to a state or federal law that requires insurers to cover all jobs and households in the U.S. and have a minimum wage of $23,476 for an individual.
You must also meet the eligibility requirements for Medicare Part A, which covers all adults, and Part B, which is for workers with disabilities.
To find out whether your policy meets Medicare requirements, go to Medicare.gov and click on the “Insurance information” link.
To check whether you have an eligible policy, go into your policy’s claims and payments section and click the “Check your Medicare eligibility” link on the left.
If you do not see your policy in this section, go back to Medicare and click “Apply for Medicare coverage.”
Your policy should have an asterisk next to the “Payment Amount” line that reads “Medicare Part A: $23.476, Medicare Part B: $24,100” and be under 60% of the federal poverty level, according to Medicare guidelines.
You can find out more about the eligibility for Medicare by going to Medicare’s website.
