AUSTIN, Texas — With a team on the brink of a playoff berth and the prospect of a second consecutive Super Bowl, one of the country’s most respected insurance companies is making an aggressive bid to acquire the Austin American-Statesman.
The Tribune reports that Bloom Insurance Agency, a major Austin insurer, is interested in buying the Austin Statesman, which is the No. 3 sports paper in the nation and one of four papers in Texas.
It is also a leading local newspaper and the most widely read in the state, with an average of more than 10,000 daily readers.
The Austin Statesmen are owned by Tribune Media.
The newspaper is owned by Dallas-based Tribune Media and the Times Media Group.
It has about 3,000 local and national journalists and more than 15 million print and online readers, according to the company.
The Austin Statesmans team has won five state championships, two NCAA tournaments and six national championships.
